Kitchen Remodel Top 5 Tips – Before & After Kitchen Remodel

Kitchen Remodel Tips

Kitchen Remodel Top 5 Tips | Before & After Kitchen Remodel

I just recently completed a kitchen remodel and I wanted to go over some tips and advice I learned a long the way. Over all I am quite happy with the final product, even though it took a lot longer than expected. I started this journey at the end of April and actually just finished this past August. And that was because of a delay in my range hood. Otherwise, it would have been completed much sooner.

If you are thinking about doing a kitchen remodel here are my top 5 tips for you:

  1. Get at least 3 or 4 different estimates:

I had about 4 different contractors come out and give me an estimate. Most of them were way over priced and they really did not see my vision. They were all big companies that did the entire remodel.

  1. Hire individual contractors:

What I realized was that I could actually save money by hiring individual contractors, then hiring a company that did the entire project all at once. Granted it took longer, but I saved a lot of money by going this route.

Most of the estimates I received to do my kitchen was for the cabinets and labor, this still did not include the countertops, backsplash or appliances. Most of the companies was quoting me around $30,000. Which was way more then I wanted to spend.

  1. Buy pre-fabricated cabinets:

I only recommend this route if you do not have any major changes with your kitchen layout. I saved at least $10,000, if not more by doing this. I was able to get awesome white shaker cabinets at a fraction of the cost, and they were all soft close cabinets and drawers.

Also, by doing this, I was able to update my downstairs bathroom and laundry room. So, not only did I get a brand-new kitchen, I also got a brand-new bathroom and laundry room. My cabinets for all three areas were a little over $10,000 and this included labor and handles installed.

  1. Order Faucets, Sinks, Tile and Appliances ahead of time:

I recommend ordering all your kitchen fixtures, tile and possibly appliances, before your project begins. With delays in products, due to COVID, it is wise to plan ahead.

  1. Expect delays:

The only downside to hiring individual contractors was the delays. You are at their mercy for availability. Due to COVID, most of my contractors were booked out. Even though my cabinet guy was ready to install, my counter top guy was delayed by a few weeks. So, I had cabinets in at least 3 weeks before my countertops were installed. If you are ok with that, then go for it. It’s well worth the savings.

Are you ready to hear the final cost of my kitchen, bathroom and laundry room renovation? I spent almost $44,000 on the total project and this includes all my appliances. I bought all brand-new black finger print proof stainless steel appliances; which was a refrigerator, dishwasher, double oven, cooktop, range hood and washer and dryer. Plus, 4 sinks, 4 faucets, tile backsplash, garbage disposal, reverse osmosis, water softener, and cabinet hardware. Oh, and let’s not forget about the granite countertops.

I also went with a black and white theme because I felt it was timeless and will hold its value longer. White shaker cabinets, black hardware, black faucets with a farmer sink and black granite countertops with 2 1/4” edge and a waterfall edge at the end. I know granite? What? I really liked the look of the Black Mamba honed granite countertops, they were unique and not a lot of people have. I see too many people going with the white quartz counter tops that look like Carrera marble, with the white or gray cabinets.
